World Theatre Day

Ministry of Culture(Govt. of India), North Zone Cultural Centre( Patiala) and Lovely Professional University have jointly paid befitting reverence towards World Theatre Day(WTD). The week- long celebration, opening on March 22 with a motivating play 'Mind Games' from Jammu region, saw the concluding day, March 27, with marvellous presentation of 'Raunkan' from Punjab with a great message to check female- foeticide. In between performances for five other plays, 'Gaj Foot Inch', 'Aur Ek Sacch', 'Mote Ram ka Satyagraha'and 'Gaddi Charan Di Kaahal Bari Si', certainly created a new dimension in the Theatre Festival. These kept regularly and subtly permeating the souls of the gripped onlookers whether through action, direction, dialogues, scenes, sense or threads of the story.

Six National level eminent directors of these six superb plays from North zone, Mr Sumeet Sharma, Mr Kuldeep Sharma, Mr Aziz Quraishi, Mr RC Pathak, Mr Kewal Dhaliwal and Mr Sukhwinder Singh kept mesmerizing the audience of the University at Shri Baldev Raj Mittal Auditorium till the World Theatre Day. It was all through the excellence in their direction to portray alike the real good and bad characters from the society. They said i unison: "As thousands of students at LPU belong to most of the Indian states and different foreign lands; we earnestly feel that during this organization, the functional spectrum of the Ministry of Culture, to create cultural awareness from the grass root to the international cultural exchange level was fully up-held." It was further added: "Acknowledging the World Theatre Day, It was to celebrate the local theatre experience globally. We are now feeling firmly that we are not alone in our pursuit, and theatre is not dead."

Talking to the Media, the Chancellor of the University, Mr Ashok Mittal said: "With participation of many artists and directors of great stature from different regions, the event forcefully revealed motivating and awakening ideas. No doubt it is an age of advance technology oriented Videos, CDs, 3-D depictions etc; the way the university students kept spell bound throughout all the performances is really a great tribute to the World Theatre Day." Anticipating that they must have learnt a lot from this ancient form of art and style, he further added: "Being in unison with the Ministry of Culture, we, too, are very keen towards preserving, promoting and disseminating all forms of art and culture."

It is worth illustration that the North Zone Cultural Center is one of the seven cultural centers established in the country to strengthen the ancient roots of Indian Culture. It comprises regions from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttrakhand, Rajasthan & Chandigarh (U.T)
